November 14th is World Diabetes Day, which provides an opportunity to raise awareness on Diabetes as a global health issue. A significant number of people in Kenya and the region lack access to #DiabetesCare including availability and accessibility of quality oral medicines.

For this year’s #WorldDiabetesDay, Dawa Life Sciences together with Broadways Limited hosted a free health clinic for screening Diabetes and Hypertension in Baba Dogo, Nairobi.

Qualified medical practitioners dispensed medicines from our Diabetes line to more than 300 people. “The turnout was tremendous, and this proves that Diabetes Care and education needs to be looked into more. We checked sugar levels and educated the people on Diabetes care. The medical clinic was indeed a success ” Ethney Kibet – Business Development, Dawa Life Sciences.

Our team visited The NEST children’s home in Limuru. The NEST is a Project for the Rescue, Rehabilitation and Integration of Children in Conflict with the Law & Children of Imprisoned Mothers. The children’s home houses approximately 100 children from newborns to 17 year olds; whose mothers are imprisoned.

The children receive holistic care, counselling and education, and was officially opened in 1997. ”Many children are traumatized after experiencing crime or abuse and the arrest of and separation from their mothers. Nothing brings us more joy than giving back to the community. Dawa Life Sciences strives to make a positive change in the world; a better quality life for all. As part of our yearly CSR plan, we visited St Catherine’s Children’s home, in Kibera, Nairobi. Kibera is the largest urban slum in Africa. We gave food items, mattresses, beddings and other supplies. The children’s home relies on well-wishers to provide for the orphans, abandoned and neglected children of all age.

Our team had a great time interacting, mentoring and playing with the jovial children. During a football match, we were surprised at the talent the young children possess. Their strategy on the pitch ensured they made many successful passes. We talked to them about the importance of education and that the future is theirs.

Before leaving, the team took a few pictures. We are glad to be part of a cause that looks after our communities. On 26th August 2022, our team visited Thika Main Prison in Thika – Kenya. This marks a second visit after an earlier visit led by Lady Arooj and our chairman, Dr. Raju Mohindra, who also chairs Thika Level 5 hospital. We donated medication, food, kids clothes, mattresses, blankets, toiletries, farm fertilizers, books, pencils, and other household items. The facility hosts men, women and children.

Dawa Life Sciences team was led by Mr. Ashvani, CEO – Dawa Life Sciences Animal Health Division, Albert and Sanjee Sharma from the FRDL team; who are discussing some renovations in the prison with the facility’s management.

For the first time in Expo’s 170-year history, every African country is represented at Expo 2020. Giokos visits the Kenyan pavilion which showcases the country’s most successful industries.

The program also explores how the pandemic bolstered calls for countries to jump-start local production of essential goods. In Kenya, pharmaceutical company Dawa Life Sciences received a grant to help develop the country’s local vaccine ecosystem. Mwai Ngibuini, Former Group Head of Business Development and Communication at Dawa Life Sciences, talks about the significance of the healthcare sector, “Healthcare is critical for a nation’s growth. I’m not just talking about the medicines, but the expertise to manufacture the medicines, the technologies have to be in-country, as well as having enough healthcare workers.”

Headquartered in Nairobi, Dawa Life Sciences manufactures and distributes pharmaceuticals, animal medicines, and chemicals in 25 markets across Africa. Co-founder and Chairman Raju Mohindra says that the company plans to expand its African footprint in the coming years, “Our international business is at about 25 to 30 percent of our total turnover, so we want to grow it to at least 60 percent. So, from just a local, homegrown, Kenyan entity, we want to become a pan-African reference point.”

As the continent continues to open up, Connecting Africa sees how businesses are taking advantage of the growing number of opportunities, with business leaders aiming to make the most of this new era.

On 8th July, Dawa Life Sciences together with United States International University – Africa and 3 other Pharmaceutical companies kicked-off the Dual Vocational Training Program for Pharmaceutical Production Specialists – a program sponsored by the German Metrology Institute (PTB), an institution of the Federal Government of Germany.
It is set to provide an opportunity for young students to qualify them working as operators in #Pharmaceutical production after 12 months course completion.
In attendance were delegates from the Ministry of Health, Kenya, the German Embassy, the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce for Eastern Africa (AHK Eastern Africa), and the Kenya National Qualification Authority.

“This program fits perfectly in our wider development cooperation portfolio with Kenya, the East African Region and the African Union. It will provide many opportunities for training and developing capacity within the Pharmaceutical Industry in collaboration with German partners” said Deputy German Ambassador, Thomas Wimmer.

In an effort to evaluate, improve and recognize outstanding performance, our technical team undertook a 1-year self-audit program, resulting to positive impact on the organization’s GMP compliance. Our Penicillin department turned out victorious followed by the warehouse and liquids departments.

50 Pharma and Animal health division employees from Production, Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Warehouse, Maintenance and Regulatory Affairs departments are undergoing what is called “GMP Short Course” (Good Manufacturing Practices)

The aim of the course is to refresh and build on skills in Quality Risk Assessment, Deviations, Complaints, Recalls, Pharmacovigilance, Qualification, Calibration and Computerized System Validation.
